Questions About the Group:

  • What are the overall 3 priorities of Progressive Nation WNC?
    1. To create positive action in the face of the erosion of democracy
    2. To work towards empowering the Progressive Voice & mending the divide between “Democrats” & “Progressives”
    3. To enact change in our local communities, which will ripple out into our larger societies
      • For more information, please refer to the Mission Page of our Website: (To be posted soon)
  • What counties are represented by Progressive Nation WNC?
    • As of right now we have active members in our physical and digital groups from Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, and Swain Counties. If you are a member of PN WNC and reside in a different county, please let us know so that we can update our database to account for you!
    • We are trying to expand our reach to as much of the far west as possible: Cherokee, Clay, Graham, & Transylvania in addition to the counties that we currently cover.
  • Are there plans for groups in each county?
    • The most amazing and important aspect of our group is that it is completely organized and activated by volunteer efforts, which means that the growth and expansion is an extraordinarily organic process. In January of 2017 alone, our group expanded by 80 physical attendees in just two short weeks and hundreds of digital followers in the same time frame.
    • We can see the benefit of, and would certainly love to have, satellite groups in each county to move towards local actions and events all across Western North Carolina — we truly are stronger when we stand united — but that can only be made possible through the help of volunteers like you!
    • Coming soon: Satellite groups in Cullowhee, Franklin, Bryson City
    • Our current directors are incredibly busy building a sustainable organization that can accommodate for the unexpected exponential growth of this group. If you would like to work with our leaders to create a focus group closer to your local area, please reach out to us and we will reach out to our network to turn your idea into a reality! You can reach us at chelseabwhite@gmail.com, natbright77@gmail.com, and amber.kevlin@aol.com
  • Are contributions needed?
    • Right now, our organization is 100% founded and directed by volunteer efforts, including the space for our meetings and events as well as the materials that we utilize and distribute for our attendees.
    • We are working on establishing a legal status as an official organization, but since we are currently just a group of people working towards the same goal, we cannot accept donations in the form of cash or checks made out on behalf of the group.
    • Instead, we accept the generous in-kind donations that our volunteers have provided us such as paper, venues to host our meetings, visual tools, and more.
    • If you are interested in donating materials or supporting the group through a financial contribution, please refer to the List of Helpful Contributions which is always being updated to reflect the most immediate needs of the group (Coming Soon).
  • Can I donate money to the group?
    • We are working on establishing a legal status as an official organization, but since we are currently just a group of people working towards the same goal, we cannot accept donations in the form of cash or checks made out on behalf of the group. Instead, we accept the generous in-kind donations that our volunteers have provided us such as paper, venues to host our meetings, visual tools, and more.
  • How can I help support you financially?
    • If you are interested in donating materials or supporting the group through a financial contribution, please refer to the List of Helpful Contributions which is always being updated to reflect the most immediate needs of the group.
    • Please also consider making financial donations to some of the groups that we collaborate and stand in solidarity with: The Haywood County Democratic Party, The Jackson County Democratic Party, the NC NAACP, ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and any other progressive or activist organization that you support.
  • Is there any alignment between Progressive Nation and the Democratic Party? If so, what?
    • Our group currently operates as an entity that is unaffiliated with either party and embraces a broad variety of lifestyles, beliefs, and ideologies between our group members.
    • We also recognize that in order to make immediate, real impact in our political system, we have to change the system from the inside out. Establishment politics at the top of the ticket have broken our democracy for those who are meant to be heard by it; our group works with a similar strategy to that which was exemplified by Bernie Sanders (a strategy which worked, according to the election results from the Primary and General Elections in the western counties).
    • Our strategy incorporates the active involvement of our membership in reforming the Democratic Party from the ground up to prevent another dichotomy between the working-class members of the party and those who have been dissociated from these parts of the population. We work with the Democratic Party to enhance and empower the Progressive Voice and Progressive Agenda and move the Democratic Party further to the left on the political spectrum to promote a more progressive future in policy and culture.

Questions about Activism/Challenges:

  • How can we focus our energies with so many issues needing to be addressed?
    • Remember to keep coming back to your vision.
    • When you close your eyes and imagine the future that you are working towards, what are the most important aspects about that future? Is it the amount of green on the trees around you? Is it the clean air you are breathing in or the astounding schools that your children have equal access to receive their education from?
    • Focus on one issue each day. Make one call about one issue that matters to you each day.
    • Refer to our action steps for a greater sense of direction, make one call on behalf of one action step. If the action steps don’t stick with you, reach out to us so that we can connect you to other resources.
    • One call a day only requires 5 mins of your time, every day of the week. And with perseverance and focus on our outcome, we will make a difference.
